If you support Catalan independance there is a bright side to the lack of real democratic debate here in Spain. The more the Spanish centralists ignore Catalonia, the stronger will be the arguments for Catalan independance. It is my opinion that Catalans will become more and more disgusted by what goes on in Madrid and its attitude to Catalonia.

Any country that claims to be a democracy but then stifles democratic debate will eventually fail. More Catalans will see that they are not listened to. I can not understand how well-educated and liberal leaning Castilians continue to have such a hate--it is a storng word but it is a hate--for all things Catalan but will blithly embrace English, or Polish or Swahili or whatever. The antipathy directed at us Catalans is distubing.

Whenever I read an article like yours that shows the disrespect directed toward Catalonia I get angry. But I also take heart because other Catalans are also getting angry. And that anger will serve us well.

I think that most Catalans would elect to remain part of Spain if Catalonia was given more autonomy and shown a minimum of respect for its language and culture. But that will not happen and Catalan seperatism will gain as a result.
